Prevent and Heal Peeling Nails: What to Know

Many of us suffer from dry, brittle, peeling nails. Sometimes it might be a fungal infection known as onychomycosis causing the symptoms, while other times it could be that we are just too rough on our nails. There are steps that you can take, however, that will reduce peeling and breakage and they are all pretty easy. Let’s take a look at them:

  1. Wear Gloves–When you are doing chores around the house or using strong chemicals, wear gloves to protect your hands and nails. Chemicals like bleach and other cleaning products will damage your hands.
  2. Soak in Olive Oil–Rub olive oil on your nails and around the cuticles every day or soak them for 10 minutes in a small bowl of olive oil to rehydrate them.
  3. Too Much Water–Washing your hands repeatedly can lead to damaged nails and dry skin. If you have to wash your hands frequently, apply a hand cream afterward.
  4. Take a Vitamin–Many women swear by a biotin supplement for hair and nails. Talk with your doctor about adding a biotin supplement to your regimen.
  5. Avoid Acetone–While acetone is super effective at removing nail polish, it also strips the nail of its nutrients. Try an acetone-free wipe or solution instead (like Josie Maran BearNaked Nail Wipes, where a portion of their sales goes to the Polar Bear SOS Initiative.)
  6. Use IBX Nail Treatment–We offer this treatment at Practically Perfect and are really excited to share it with you. It goes on BEFORE a gel treatment to strengthen your nails. Check out the photo below:
